ImagePDIC Launches Occasional Paper No. 2 during IADI Conference

The Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation releases the second PDIC Occasional Paper entitled "Deposit Insurance in Selected Asian Countries: Before and After the Financial Crisis"    to an international audience in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia  during a recent meeting of the Asia Regional Committee of the International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI) on the occasion of the 6th IADI International Conference.

Authored by deposit insurance expert David K. Walker, the paper tackles the impact of the Asian financial crisis on the deposit insurance systems in Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Taiwan, Republic of China, and Vietnam as well as on countries which had henceforth established their own systems namely Hongkong,  Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China . It also discusses the various stages of the development of deposit insurance systems in these countries, common structures and best practices, and how these systems were affected by the crisis.  The paper also recommends that stronger regional cooperation must be continually pursued in the light of the increasing competitiveness and dynamism of financial systems worldwide.

Mr. Walker is widely acknowledged for his various works in helping countries develop effective deposit insurance systems and enhance their existing financial system safety nets.  He is at present the Director of the Policy and International Department at the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC).

This is the first issue of the PDIC Occasional Paper series which had featured an international expert and a colleague from the IADI. The first PDIC Occasional Paper by respected Philippine economist Dr. Gilberto Llanto, entitled "Deposit Insurance: Role, Limitations, and Challenges" was released in June 2005.
